What is PARAFILM made of and how does it seal without adhesive?
PARAFILM is composed of a blend of polyolefins and paraffin waxes. It seals through self-adhesion when stretched and pressed onto a surface. The material's elasticity and wax content create a temporary bond that conforms to irregular shapes without requiring heat or adhesive. The seal is moisture-resistant and gas-permeable, suitable for short-term applications.
What are the temperature limits for PARAFILM?
PARAFILM is rated for continuous use up to approximately 60°C (140°F). At higher temperatures, the film may soften, lose its seal integrity, or melt. It is not recommended for autoclaving or use in ovens. For applications above 60°C, alternative sealing methods should be considered.
Can PARAFILM be used with organic solvents or strong acids?
PARAFILM is not chemically resistant to organic solvents, strong acids, or bases. The polyolefin-wax blend can degrade or dissolve when exposed to such chemicals. It is best suited for aqueous solutions, mild buffers, and general laboratory reagents. Always test compatibility with your specific chemical before use.
Is PARAFILM sterile or autoclavable?
PARAFILM is supplied as non-sterile. It is not autoclavable because the material will melt or deform at typical autoclave temperatures (121°C). For sterile applications, the film can be surface-disinfected with 70% ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, but this does not guarantee sterility. Use sterile alternatives if required.
What sizes of PARAFILM does 3G Electric offer?
3G Electric stocks PARAFILM in 2-inch and 4-inch widths, with lengths of 125 ft and 250 ft per roll. All rolls have a thickness of 0.13 mm. The film is clear and non-sterile. Part numbers include HS234526A (2 in x 250 ft), HS234526B (4 in x 125 ft), and HS234526C (4 in x 250 ft).
How should PARAFILM be stored to maintain its properties?
Store PARAFILM in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Ideal storage temperature is between 15°C and 25°C. Avoid exposure to ozone, UV light, and strong chemical fumes. Under proper conditions, the shelf life is approximately 3 years from the date of manufacture.
