Frequently asked questions
Common questions about LEESON from 3G Electric.
What is the difference between LEESON IEC metric motors and NEMA motors?
LEESON IEC metric motors use mounting dimensions and frame sizes defined by IEC standards, such as frame 71 or 80, with metric shaft and bolt dimensions. NEMA motors use inch-based dimensions and NEMA frame sizes. IEC motors are specified when equipment is built to metric standards or when replacing a motor on imported machinery. Electrical ratings may be similar, but mounting compatibility differs. Always verify frame size, mounting type, and shaft dimensions when cross-referencing.
How do I select a replacement LEESON motor brush?
Replacement LEESON motor brushes, such as the 900015.18, are matched to specific motor series or models. To select the correct brush, identify the motor's manufacturer part number or nameplate data, then cross-reference to the brush part number. Brush dimensions, grade, and terminal configuration must match the original. Using an incorrect brush can cause excessive wear, arcing, or commutator damage. Consult the motor manual or contact 3G Electric with the motor model number for assistance.
What does TEFC mean on a LEESON motor?
TEFC stands for totally enclosed fan cooled. A TEFC motor has a sealed enclosure that prevents dust, dirt, and moisture from entering the internal components. An external fan blows air over the enclosure to dissipate heat. TEFC motors are suitable for indoor and outdoor industrial environments where contamination is a concern. They are not submersible. LEESON offers TEFC enclosures on many general-purpose and IEC metric motors, including the 1 1/2 hp 080T34FH5303 and the 1/2 hp 071T17FH5508.
Can LEESON C-face motors be mounted in any orientation?
LEESON C-face motors with a rigid base are designed for mounting with the base bolted to a horizontal surface, which sets the shaft orientation. C-face only motors can be mounted in various orientations as long as the driven equipment supports the motor and proper lubrication and cooling are maintained. For C-face with rigid base models, the base provides additional support and alignment. Always follow the motor's installation instructions regarding mounting position and drain hole locations for TEFC enclosures.
What voltage options are available for LEESON general-purpose AC motors?
LEESON general-purpose 3-phase AC motors are commonly available in 230/460V AC, 575V AC, and other voltages at 60 Hz. Some models are dual-rated for 50/60 Hz operation. For example, the 1 hp 121179.00 is rated 230/460V at 60 Hz, while the 1 1/2 hp 080T34FH5303 is rated 575V at 60 Hz. Voltage selection depends on the available power supply and the motor's nameplate rating. Always match the motor voltage to the supply and control equipment.
What is the full load current of a 2 hp LEESON motor?
Full load current varies with voltage, speed, and motor design. For example, the LEESON 2 hp 121181.00 at 1,745 RPM draws 2.0 A at 230/460V AC. The 2 hp 121673.00 at 3,490 RPM draws 2.4 A at 230/460V AC. These values are for 60 Hz operation. Always refer to the motor nameplate for the exact full load current, as it determines branch circuit and overload protection sizing.
